| About the Club The club was founded in 1966 as the Shih Tzu Club of Wisconsin by a group of very enthusiatic first time Shih Tzu owners and exhibitors from the Milwaukee area. Since Shih Tzu had only recently been introduced to the United States, the breed was still being shown in the Miscellaneous Classes.. Early club members included Maxine and Donald Canny, Delores and Ray Snopek (Del Ray), Carole Schielke (Town Hall), Hazel Poff, May Vieau and Clare Blasinski (Grenouille Shih Tzu). Many of these early members were very active in exhibiting their dogs and won many first place ribbons in the Miscellaneous class. When the breed was recognized on September 1, 1969, several of these club members, such as Carol Schielke and Clare Blasinski continued on to show and breed AKC champions. The name of the club was changed to the Greater Milwaukee Shih Tzu Club in the early 1970's to reflect the concentration of the club members within the Milwaukee area, and was changed yet again in 1998 to the Shih Tzu Club of Southeastern Wisconsin. The members of the club have enjoyed much success in breeding and exhibiting their Shih Tzu. A number of top producers, specialty winners and BIS Shih Tzu have been bred or owned by our club members. |
| Club Activities Our club works to support our breed and breed activities by holding a variety of programs and activities each year. We hold meetings every month, with the exception of August and December. The meetings are held alternatively in the homes of our club members or in area restaurants. The meetings that are held in member's homes usually feature a very nice 'potluck' lunch. We often have educational programs/presentations after our meetings on a variety of topics which are of interest to both newcomers and seasoned exhibitors. Some of the topics presented in the past have included videotapes on proper movement, the Shih Tzu standard, and the proper way to show a dog. Tapes from some of the past Shih Tzu Club of America specialty shows have also been shown at these meetings. Presentations have included the proper grooming and coat care of the Shih Tzu; sound breeding practices; presentations by area veterinarians on a number of health topics relevant to the Shih Tzu; agility training; obedience training; Shih Tzu rescue; proper recordkeeping; conformation handling techniques and a number of other very interesting topics. Our annual calendar of activities includes two fun matches in the spring and the fall; a July picnic for our members (including family, friends and Shih Tzu!); the World of Dogs which is an annual event held in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Fair; an Annual Awards Dinner held in November and other 'fun' events throughout the year. |
